Ah, school. That joyous place where one learns about life, love, and all the crap that comes with one or the other. But, that’s not what we’re there for. No, we’re there to learn stuff like QUADRATICS and ANALYSIS OF SHAKESPEARE and POLYMERIZATION. Well… the thing is, once you’ve learned about these things, what do you do with them? If you graduate from school, the chances that you’re going to be interested in a career in mathematics is, let’s face it, close to zero, and other careers that are directly correlated with what you learned in high school have similarly low entrance rates.
So, why do we go to school? Why do we enslave ourselves from 6 years old to 18 or beyond? Why do we spend 6 or more hours sitting in desks writing or typing out word after word of endless drivel? Well, I know that your answer would probably be that it’s required by the law, but that’s not a REAL reason, now, is it?
Well, teachers can blather on and on about how useful what they’re teaching us is going to be, but the sad truth is that almost none of it useful. Sure, good grades can get you into a nice college, but once you graduate with your little “Political Science” degree, what are you gonna do with it? No, the reason we actually go to school is a very simple one. In the words of Koji Kumeta, “High school is only a preview of real life”. And, you’ve got to admit, the man was right about that one.
When you go to high school, there are all sorts of different groups and people, one of which you will inevitably end up in… just like real life social classes. You’re judged all the time by demanding slave drivers, and if you don’t do what they ask, or you do it incorrectly, you get punished badly… just like the criminal justice system. The romance you have in high school? It’s nothing compared to the romance you’ll have once you’re out of school, but it does give you an idea how the entire thing is supposed to work.
Anyways, the point is that school is a place to get used to life, or, at least, get a feel for what it’s like. So, remember: if you’re down because of grades, THAT’S NOT WHY YOU’RE IN SCHOOL. You’re in school to learn the rules of life, and how to obey them and get them right. And THAT’S what you learn in school.
… Just a warning. If you spout any of this to your teachers, you are DEFINITELY going to get into trouble. Not probably. Definitely.
And, if you liked this, go ahead and comment. Or share it with your friends. Or dig or Stumble or do the hokey-pokey or whatever it is people do these days. Hi! I just found your blog and I thought it was angsty but interesting. On this topic I think you are wrong, just personally. Our whole life can be thought of as a learning process, we learn new things all the time. However, I think school is there for us to learn basic knowledge that will help us in the rest of our life. When I grow up and have grand kids, I don't think the value of 1 will change to 3. School does help you socially, but that isn't what it is there for. It is a controlled educational system. The educational system now is called general education" because it gives you a generalization for most of the main subjects which will later on be integrated in your career choice. I think school is an essential, or at least education, for all children. However, I think your view is interesting, different but interesting.
